What do You, Russell Wilson, and a Ferrari have in common?
Isn’t it nice to be put in the same ranks as Seahawks superstar Russell Wilson and one of the most luxurious cars around? Doesn’t it feel good for someone to finally recognize your greatness too?
To recover from all of the hard hits he takes every day and to continue to compete at his elite level, Russell Wilson spends $1 Million each year to maintain his body to perform as an NFL superstar. And no, that was not a typo. $1 Million! This includes a private personal trainer, a private physical therapist, a personal chef, and the list goes on.
To keep his ride as smooth and fancy as the name sounds, a Ferrari owner spent $4600 in a year to maintain his car to perform as the luxurious vehicle that it is. This includes oil changes, tire repair, and new brake pads to name a few.
If you’re anything like me, you may say, “Well, I’m not trying to win the super bowl and I’m not planning on buying a Ferrari. What’s this got to do with me?” Just like Russell Wilson and a Ferrari, you need to be taking care of your body if you want it to continue doing the things you enjoy. How disappointing would it be if Wilson decided to spend this money and time on something else and he couldn’t continue to excel and win games for the Seahawks? And wouldn’t it be a sad sight to see a fancy Ferrari broken down on the side of the road because the owner didn’t want to pay for an oil change?
It would be much, much worse if you did not take the appropriate actions now and find yourself utterly disappointed that you can’t continue to mountain bike, water ski, workout, play with your grandkids, garden, or whatever your activity of choice may be. Be careful not to dismiss this and say that you’ll think about it when you turn 80.
How much are you spending on yourself to maintain your level of performance doing the activities that are important to you? And don’t think of it only in a financial sense with how much you spend for your gym membership or buying healthy food. Also think about how much time you are spending taking care of yourself. The first question may be obvious - how much time are you spending exercising or being active? How much time are you spending sleeping/resting? How much time are you spending engaging your mind?
Lastly, make a plan. Wilson has a very specific regimen that he follows every day. The Ferrari owner follows the recommended maintenance schedule. Your plan shouldn’t look like Wilson’s or be based on your mileage. Make your plan based on what you like to do and what you need to do to get there (or stay there).
